Prime Minister Balkenende of the Netherlands visits Canada

Prime Minister Balkenende visited Canada on Monday June 11 and Tuesday June 12, 2007.
The objective of his visit is to strengthen co-operation between both countries. Some of the subjects to be discussed are security (including co-operation in Afghanistan), cultural diversity, sustainability and energy supply guarantees.
On Monday morning Prime Minister Balkenende will place a wreath at The National War Monument in Ottawa, followed by a meeting with Prime Minister Stephen Harper at Parliament Hill. As well, discussions will be held with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Defence and Development Co-operation.
In the afternoon the Prime Minister will give a speech for the Canadian Institute of International Affairs, after which he will leave for Edmonton, where he will be meeting the Dutch community.
The visit to Alberta on Tuesday regards cooperation with Canada in the area of sustainability of energy supplies in this province.
At a breakfast meeting hosted by Mayor Mandel of Edmonton, Prime Minister Balkenende will give a key note address for representatives of the business community of Alberta and the members of a Dutch FME trade mission (Technological, Industrial, Employers and Business Association), which is in Alberta at the same time. After his visit to the National Institute for NanoTechnology (NINT), the Prime Minister will attend a meeting, followed by a luncheon at Government House, hosted by Premier Ed Stelmach of Alberta.
Before returning to The Netherlands, Prime Minister Balkenende will visit the oil sands in the afternoon.
