On Tuesday September 4th and Wednesday September 5th a Canadian delegation of representatives from the Canadian medical sector arrived in the Netherlands upon an invitation by the Netherlands Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport. The delegation was led by Canadian Deputy Minister Morris Rosenberg and completed a three day program focussed on improving hospital care.
Discussed was the Dutch program called Faster Better as well as the multitude of experiences the Canadian delegation brought to the discussion table, for instance experiences regarding hospital safety. The visit entailed a combination of presentations, workshops and visits to Dutch hospitals (in Delft and Rotterdam).
Deputy Minister Rosenberg had additional meetings concerning the Dutch drugs policy, mental healthcare and public sector reforms. Deputy Minister Rosenberg met separately with the Secretary-General, Mr. van Maanen and the Deputy Secretary-General, Mr. P. Huijts of the Dutch Ministry of Health. Deputy Director-General for Healthcare, Marcelis Boereboom and Director for International Affairs, Lenie Kootstra were the hosts for the remainder of the program.
This exchange of ideas is a fulfilment of an earlier agreement between the Prime Ministers of Canada and the Netherlands to strengthen our bilateral relations. There exists a mutual desire to strengthen our already excellent bilateral relations, especially taking into consideration the like-mindedness of our respective countries. Moreover, in the area of healthcare we are both facing similar challenges such as rising costs of the healthcare system, safety and patient care.
The Canadian delegation remained in the Netherlands until September 7th. The prospect exists that a Dutch delegation will pay a return visit to Canada in 2008 to discuss another issue within the area of healthcare.
