The travelling exhibition of the world’s best press photographs of 2007, selected at World Press Photo’s worldwide 2008 photojournalism contest in Amsterdam, had its Canadian première in Ottawa. The famous media picture exhibition was on public display at the Canadian War Museum from June 31 until August 24. The next stop of the exhibition is Montreal followed by Toronto later on in the fall so there is still an opportunity for you to see this very worthwhile exhibition, if you missed the Ottawa premiere. World Press Photo has its headquarters in Amsterdam.

World Press Photo Exhibition is in Montreal from August 28 – September 28, 2008, at the Musée Juste pour Rire, 2111, boulevard Saint-Laurent and in Toronto from 2 – 22 October, 2008, at the Allen Lambert Galleria, Brookfield Place (formerly BCE place).

Afghanistan picture

Among the winning images featured in the exhibition is the World Press Photo of the Year 2007, regarded as the photojournalistic encapsulation of the year; a photograph that represents an issue, situation or event of great journalistic importance. This year the premier award went to British photographer Tim Hetherington with an arresting picture of an American soldier after a day of heavy fighting in Afghanistan. The picture depicts a soldier of Second Platoon, Battle Company of the Second Battalion of the US 503rd Infantry Regiment, who sinks onto an embankment in the Restrepo bunker in the Korengal Valley, at the end of the day on September 16. The valley was the epicenter of the US fight against militant Islam in Afghanistan, and scene of some of the deadliest combat in the region. Tim Hetherington was in Afghanistan on assignment for Vanity Fair.

All over de world

The annual exhibition is shown each year at about 100 venues in 55 countries all over the world on condition that all prizewinning entries are exhibited without any form of censorship. This year’s exhibition contains 185 photographs. It is an annual public showcase for photojournalism comprising the year’s winning photo, together with award-winning images from each of the ten contest categories. The high quality of photojournalism is considered to set a standard in the field. As a visual record of the previous year’s events, the exhibition has popular appeal and attracts a significantly wider range of visitors than traditional art and photography exhibitions.

World Press Photo, Amsterdam

World Press Photo is an independent, non-profit organization. World Press Photo was founded in 1955 in Amsterdam where its offices remain to this day. Its main aim is to support and promote internationally the work of professional press photographers. Over the years, World Press Photo has evolved into an independent platform for photojournalism and the free exchange of information.

In order to realize its objectives, World Press Photo organizes the world’s largest and most prestigious annual press photography contest. Educational projects play an important role in World Press Photo’s activities. Seminars and workshops open to individual photographers, photo agencies and picture editors are organized in developing countries. The annual Joop Swart Master class, held in the Netherlands, is aimed at talented photographers at the start of their careers. They receive practical instruction and professional advice from leaders in the profession.
