Burlington and Apeldoorn officially signed a twinning agreement on May 6, 2024 in Apeldoorn. A memorandum of understanding was signed in Burlington on Oct. 16, 2003.
Nineteen citizens from Apeldoorn, the Netherlands, visited Burlington from Oct. 7 to 16. Their trip focused on the arts and nature and included a visit to the Royal Botanical Gardens; a rehearsal for the Ambassador Choir; a day-trip to Toronto; a tour and demonstration at the Burlington Art Centre; a tour of the longhouse and trails at Crawford Lake; a day-long tour of Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake; and a walking tour of downtown Burlington.
One objective of this citizen exchange program is to promote citizen involvement creating strong bonds of friendship, specifically in the fields of art, business, sport, culture, education, environmental protection and conservation, and health and science. These citizen-to-citizen visits are seen to be an important cornerstone of the twinning relationship. This was the second citizen exchange for Apeldoorn citizens – the first exchange occurred in 2006. Last year, 11 Burlington residents had the opportunity to visit Apeldoorn and experience life, nature and the arts in the Netherlands.
Mayor De Graaf of Apeldoorn attended the Mayor’s Chamber of Commerce State of the City address on Oct. 15 and helped unveil a sign in honour of Burlington’s twin city relationships on Thursday, Oct. 16. Mayor De Graaf’s visit ended in Toronto with a meeting to discuss plans to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands in 2010.
