Ottawa: ambassador shines a light on Canadian soldiers

MEDAL OF MERIT AFGHANISTAN
On behalf of the Netherlands Minister of Defence, Ambassador Wim Geerts bestowed a Dutch medal to Canadian military Chief Warrant Officer Giovanni Moretti for his extraordinary efforts with regard to the excellent cooperation between the Canadian and Dutch forces stationed in Afghanistan.
Also present was Major-General Marc Lessard, who – in an earlier ceremony in Afghanistan received the Dutch Medal of Merit In Gold. The Ambassador expressed his gratitude to General Lessard for his excellent work as Commander ISAF Regional Command South.
The event took place at the Ambassador’s residence in Ottawa, where Geerts pinned the Dutch Medal of Merit in Silver to the uniform of CWO Moretti, former Regimental Sergeant Major ISAF Regional Command South.
The ceremony took place in the presence of CWO Moretti’s wife, Major- General and Mrs. Lessard as well as a number of representatives of RC South partner countries: Canada, the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark and Romania.
“The fact that two Canadian soldiers are honoured by the Netherlands Minister of Defence, illustrates the excellent relationship between the Netherlands and Canada” Geerts said. “Canada and the Netherlands consider each other important partners in Afghanistan, in support of and with the Afghan people”, explained the Ambassador.
