The Netherlands helps fight corruption in Nigeria
13 Aug 2024 | On 9 August, ambassador Arie van der Wiel signed a contract with the UNODC (the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime) pledging half a million euros to help fight corruption in Nigeria.

The money will be used to fight corruption in business, in particular to identify the nature, location and types of corruption occurring in the various sectors.

Corruption is rife in Nigeria. The chair of the country’s anti-corruption commission, Nuhu Ribadu, estimates that 400 billion oil dollars have been embezzled since the country became independent. Thanks to the commission’s work, hundreds of million of dollars in stolen funds have now been returned to the treasury.
