Death of HRH Prince Bernhard

It is with great regret that the Government Information Service, on behalf of the Prime Minister, Jan Peter Balkenende, issues the following announcement. His Royal Highness Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands passed away during the evening of Wednesday 1 December 2004. In the course of the afternoon, the Prince’s health had deteriorated further and his condition had become critical. He was admitted to Utrecht University Medical Centre, where, in accordance with his wishes, the decision was taken to desist from further treatment.

Accompanied by Her Majesty the Queen and other members of the royal family, the body of His Royal Highness Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands was conveyed from the Academic Medical Centre in Utrecht to Soestdijk Palace. The Princess body will remain in Soestdijk until the coffin is taken to Noordeinde Palace in The Hague.
