Dutch
parliament supports extension of troop presence in Iraq 12 December 2023
In The Hague, the Netherlands parliament voiced its support
for the government’s earlier decision to extend the presence of Dutch security forces in
Iraq by another 6 months. The 1,125-strong contingent will serve in southern Iraq through
mid-July 2004.
Dutch troops will remain deployed to the southern part of Iraq in the province of
Al-Muthanna, in the British-led sector, as part of Multinational Division South East (MND
SE). The contingent mainly consists of marines. About 70 commando troops will be added for
reconnaissance missions.
By extending their military involvement, the Dutch have reaffirmed their objective of
contributing to the restoration of stability and security in Iraq. The Dutch contingent
has, since its deployment last August, not only fulfilled security tasks, but been
actively involved in training Iraqi police, initiating reconstruction projects and lending
support to the rebuilding of local political structures.
