Government studying contribution to Darfur mission
Foreign minister Maxime Verhagen and development minister Bert Koenders told the House of Representatives on Friday that the government will study the possibility of contributing to the UN peace mission to Darfur (Sudan).

Earlier this year, the Sudanese government agreed to a mixed force made up of United Nations and African Union troops. At the end of June, the UN asked for contributions to the military peace operation in Darfur, which would be arriving at the end of 2007.

The government will study whether the Netherlands could support the operation, and if so, how. Koenders referred to the step as a ‘breakthrough’. Verhagen said: ‘We cannot let the people of Darfur down.’ He believes that a peace mission could substantially improve the situation.
