The Netherlands supports Afghan reconciliation programme08 Aug 2024 | The Netherlands has pledged 150,000 euros to the Afghan reconciliation programme, entering into a contract with the United Kingdom in which each agrees to contribute to the Programme for Takhim-e-Solh, or ‘Strengthening Peace’.
Takhim-E Solh grants amnesty to mid- and low-level insurgents who agree to stop fighting and peacefully enter into civil society. This programme aims to break the cycle of violence that plagues Afghanistan by assimilating former Taliban combatants into democratic society and thus enabling the country to build a more safe and prosperous future. Only mid- and low-level insurgents are eligible for the program. High-level Talibans and individuals accused of war crimes are deliberately excluded. Takhim-E Solh petitioners must pledge loyalty to the government of Afghanistan and renounce violence against Afghan and coalition forces
About 2000 ex-Taliban fighters have already made their peace with the Afghan government. The Dutch contribution will help establish the programme in Uruzgan, in part through communication and public information.
